A Gesture is Worth a Thousand Words
Having just barely finished the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers, Christmas has already taken claim all around. It's a buzz that annoys some, comforts others and almost always seems to pass as quickly as it came on. Though it is tempting at this time of year to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, it is important to make time for what really matters.
So, what does matter? Time with family, teaching a child the real meaning of Christmas, baking cookies for your neighbor who is a single mother while her husband is away at war? It's different for all of us. But, one thing I think stands out above all is finding a way to embrace the spirit of giving to help someone who would be lost without your generosity.
Having been blessed to help organize the holiday programs the past two years at Heartland United Way, I can attest first-hand that there is a strong need in our community. This need exists year-round, but I think it is often felt the most by those in need during the holiday season. Though the pay is the same, utility bills spike, your six-year-old outgrew her snow boots and winter coat, the car needs new tires and the heater went out. Suddenly, those who already had difficulty putting food on the table have many more needs pulling at their pocket.
Be that helping hand to someone this holiday season - a neighbor, family member, friend or stranger. It's not gifts or the assistance that make the difference. It's the gesture. Someone is reassured and hope is restored when a stranger reaches out a hand to help. There's nothing better you can do to reflect the true spirit of the season.
Have a blessed holiday season!
