Summer School Volunteer Readers
As part of the national day of action on June 21, 2011 Heartland United Way sent nearly 50 volunteers to read to elementary-age, summer school students at seven Grand Island Public Schools. The volunteers read to students from 8 to 8:30 am. Then, they provided each child in the class with a free book donated by a community member and encourage the students to continue reading at home during the summer.
