GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA (August 14, 2025) Grand Island came out to celebrate Heartland United Way President Karen Rathke Thursday.

August 14th marked Rathke’s 25th year serving in the position. Dozens of people took to social media to congratulate her on this milestone.

“When you think about the people who have made the biggest impacts over the past quarter century, Karen's name seemingly always is on the short list,” said Grand Island Councilman Jack Sheard.

“Your leadership shines not only through your vision and wisdom, but also through the kindness and heart you bring to every action. You inspire many with your courage, compassion, and the way you lift others to be their best. The impact of your mind and heart will continue to guide and motivate countless people,” said Heartland United Way Board Member Sandra Barrera Fuentes.

“Our communities are definitely better due to your unwavering dedication, leadership and commitment,” said Stephanie Plate, 2025 HUW Outstanding Campaign Coordinator.

Rathke received her Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Lincoln-Nebraska.
Prior to joining the United Way, she served 8 years as a Department Director for a large rural Community Action Agency serving 21 counties in North Central Nebraska. Rathke developed, implemented, and administered model programs to alleviate homelessness and to help families build stable lives. Before becoming a part of the nonprofit world, she began her professional career as a second grade teacher.

Rathke has served on the CHI St. Francis’s Board of Directors, the Hall County Community Collaborative, Rotary, numerous community organizations, and has served at the pleasure of the Governor on the Nebraska Commission on Housing and Homelessness. She was named the 2012 Woman of the Year for Grand Island and the YWCA 2012 Woman of Distinction.
